Steal this Storytime!

Hello and welcome to a new segment I like to call Steal This Storytime! in which I will detail a storytime program plan that has a 100% proven success rate (and by that I mean no children ran screaming from the room, nor did anyone pass out from sheer boredom.)  Let’s get started!

This week’s Steal This Storytime segment is brought to you by the letter “S.”  As in “Sleepy” or “Shhhh” or “Stuffed Artichokes.”  Doing a pajama-themed program?  Or just want an excuse to wear bunny slippers to work?  Here’s my most recent program plan for a storytime we call “Sleepytime”:

Opening Song: The Hello Song

Start by telling the children to raise their hands high in the air and wave them back and forth.

Hello, hello, hello.

It’s time to say “hello.”

Hello, today, to all my friends,

Hello, hello, hello.

(repeat from beginning one more time)

Fingerplay Warm-up: Here Are Grandma’s Glasses

Here are Grandma’s glasses (make little circles over your eyes with both hands),

And here is Grandma’s hat (make a small triangle shape over your head with both hands),

This is the way she folds her hands,

Just like that! (fold hands and place in lap)

Now use a deep voice and make the movements a little bigger:

Here are Grandpa’s glasses,

And here is Grandpa’s hat.

This is the way he folds his hands (tuck hands under arms instead of folding them)

Just like that!

(repeat from beginning one more time)

Book: Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep! by Maureen Wright, illustrated by Will Hillenbrand

Book: The Bunnies are Not in Their Beds by Marisabina Russo

Silly Stretches: Opposite Stretch, Lion Pose, Hug Stretch (SproutOnline has lots of fun yoga moves for kids- you can do a few in-between stories.)

Book: Little Hoot by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Goodnight Song (pretty much the same as the Hello Song)

Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.

Now it’s time to say “goodnight.”

Goodnight, goodnight, to all my friends,

Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
